Candle Safety

Enjoy Your Candles Safely

We want you to get the most out of your candles while staying safe. Candles are a wonderful addition to any space, but they do need to be used carefully. Follow these simple guidelines to keep things safe and enjoyable from the first burn to the very last.

Before Lighting Your Candle

  1. Trim the Wick
Always trim the wick to around 5 mm (¼ inch) before lighting. This helps prevent uneven burning, dripping, or excessive smoke. It also ensures the flame burns steadily and the fragrance fills the room properly. A good pair of wick trimmers will make this job quick and easy.

  2. Choose a Safe Spot
Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable like curtains, books, or furniture.

  3. Keep Out of Reach
Make sure candles are kept well out of reach of children, pets, or anywhere they could be accidentally knocked over.

While the Candle is Burning

  1. Set Limits
Don’t burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. This prevents the container from overheating and keeps the candle burning safely.

  2. Always Supervise
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Make sure it’s extinguished if you leave the room.

  3. Extinguish Before Bed
Candles should never be left burning while you sleep. Always put them out before heading to bed.

  4. Watch the Wax
Stop burning your candle when there’s 10 mm or less of wax remaining at the bottom. Burning it too low could cause the container to overheat and crack.

  5. Optimise Your Room
For the best scent throw, keep windows closed during the first 30 minutes of burning.

  6. Check the Flame
If the flame flickers or looks too large, extinguish the candle and trim the wick before relighting. A steady flame is a safer flame.

After Extinguishing Your Candle

  1. Extinguish Properly
Use a snuffer to put out the flame, as this reduces the chance of splashing wax or producing smoke. Never use water to extinguish a candle.

  2. Ensure It’s Fully Out
Check that the wick is no longer glowing before you leave the room.

  3. Let It Cool
Wait until the container has completely cooled before touching or moving it.

  4. Store Safely
Keep your candles in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight to maintain their quality.

  5. Keep Them Clean
Dust can build up on candles, so give them a quick wipe before relighting to keep them looking and burning their best.
